HSE Asbestos Medicals – CAR 2012 Compliant Health Surveillance
Asbestos exposure remains a significant occupational health risk in construction, demolition, maintenance and environmental services. Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR), employers must ensure workers who carry out licensed asbestos work or notifiable non-licensed work undergo statutory medical surveillance.

Why Are Asbestos Medicals Required?

Health surveillance helps detect early signs of asbestos-related diseases, allowing timely intervention and ongoing protection. Employers must also maintain a Health Record for every asbestos worker.

Who Needs an Asbestos Medical?

Asbestos medicals are required for workers involved in:
✅ Licensed asbestos removal and demolition
✅ Notifiable non-licensed asbestos work
✅ Activities with potential airborne fibre exposure
This includes construction workers, roofers, maintenance teams, industrial plant workers, and environmental contractors.

Who Can Perform the Asbestos Medical?

• Notifiable Non Licensed Work → A GMC-registered doctor
• Licensed asbestos work → A HSE Appointed Doctor
Our medicals are carried out by HSE-appointed doctors, ensuring full legal compliance.

What Does the Asbestos Medical Include?

  • Medical questionnaire: employment, medical + smoking history
  • Focused heart and lung examination
  • Lung function test (spirometry)
  • Review of exposure risk and symptoms

Results are normally provided on the day.

How Often Are Medicals Required?

  • Licensed work: every 2 years
  • Non-licensed notifiable work: every 3 years

A medical certificate of surveillance is issued to both the worker and employer. No confidential medical details are disclosed.
